Design Inspiration from New Preston, CT

New Preston, CT, and the surrounding areas in Litchfield County, are my idea of idyllic New England.  Think Currier & Ives and you get the picture.

I did some window shopping there today, simply for the joy of being inspired in a place I adore, in shops that I think are amazing. No, I don't live there ;-(   If you want to see the area I was in, click here.  I'm going to show you the inside of some of the shops (more fun!)

I kind of gasped when I went into Privet House.  I could move right in.  See what I mean...

Isn't this display of Hotel Silver absolutely fantastic?  I almost died.  Seriously.

This copper got me.  Right in the heart.  True. Love.

I took this one of the room and a table setting as I was going to the upstairs level.

Can you see the hammered silverware?  Gorgeous.

The second floor was about furniture and accessories...

Every where I looked, my heart raced.

Even the cleaning supplies display was crazy gorgeous!

After Privet House, I went over to Pergola, an indoor/outdoor, nature-inspired store...

I would have taken more pictures, but the store was so crowded.  Go figure.  Gorgeous New England fall day.  This little pocket of heaven.  Who would think?  Ha ha ;-)

Dawn Hill Antiques was next.  You ready?...

I nearly cried when I saw this piece!  It. was. so. beautiful.

They have some of the most gorgeous stoneware, plates, majolica, etc.  This next collection nearly moved me to change careers to thievery (okay, not a chance, but a fun thought)...

Dawn Hill specializes in French, Dutch and Swedish antiques.  I could have photographed everything, but I would have bordered on obnoxious, and who needs that.  You will have to go yourself.

I took a quick trip into Sweets for treats to bring back to the girls and my man.  Click the link to be enchanted!

Next time I'm back I will visit the rest of the shops and share.  But really, if you ever find yourself in western Connecticut, you won't regret the side trip.

Have a great week,

Navy and Orange Living Room

I'm at it again.  Creating a room using a pillow as inspiration.  Call me nuts, but I've always loved orange (if you've been following for any length of time you're rolling your eyes), and paired with navy?  Gorgeous.

Here's today's room, inspired by the pillows on the love seat (from 6 Wilson, of course...)

Here's how I came up with the room...

I knew I wanted orange chairs opposite the pillows, and these Mitchell Gold leather swivels totally fit the plan of an eclectic space rooted in tradition.  (Yup.  That's what I like.  Everything I do rooted in a bit of traditional elements.)

The Surya rug has a traditional feel with a modern twist, and brings the Ben Moore Hale Navy walls with Dove White trim to the floor to ground the space.

Next up, an Ethan Allen antique inspired settee in white and a beige and white faux bois fabric, relating to both the rug and the linen window treatments, pulling those three elements together.  I'm sorry to say I pulled the lamp and side table from my unmarked (!) file, so I don't have a source.

And, if you can't live without the fabulous F. Schumacher linen trellis pillows, you can find them here. (hee hee!)

Thanks for reading, and have a great week!

Black and White Living Room Design Inspired by Pillows

Yea, this series is definitely pretty irregular.  But as I was going through the pillow inventory on 6 Wilson today, I realized I had two pretty great pillows that would work for my latest color pallet obsession -- black, white, and honey with a pop of green.

Naturally, I had to stop everything I was doing and put a design board together.  Doesn't everyone do that?  So, here it is...

I've been in love with this Nina Campbell hydrangea wallpaper for quite some time, and it is the perfect mate to these pillows...

Add a sisal rug, a brass chandelier, two Montgomery chairs from Ethan Allen, and a Ballard Designs garden stool, and voila!

Inspiration for decorating can come from the strangest of places.  The keys to keep in mind when building around your inspiration piece(s)?

1.  Only use what you LOVE and want to look at every.single.day.

2.  Pull colors for the space from your inspiration piece.  In this case, super easy, because I knew I wanted to create the pallet I've been crazy about, so it was only three colors plus the pop of green.

3.  Make sure to add lots of texture (cut velvet black works great against smooth white linen chairs, grounded by the heavy, rough texture of sisal.)

I could go on, but those basics are enough to get started.  If your inspiration piece has lots of colors, like a piece of art might, pull out no more than THREE colors from the artwork to use in you room, and let one of those colors dominate the others.  This will help keep the room calm and cohesive.

I hope you all are enjoying the start to a lovely fall, and I plan to be back, posting with more regularity here and at CarolBeckInteriorsBlog.com.  I hope you'll come back and visit!
